When does my plan start?
Validity begins on first network connection at your destination — not when you buy, and not when you install.
Buy ahead, install at home, then activate on arrival. The validity clock doesn't tick during the install or the flight. It starts the moment your phone registers on a local mobile network using the eSIM.
What "first network connection" actually means
When your phone is set to use the esimple eSIM for data, and it sees a compatible local network at your destination, the SIM registers on that network. That registration is what starts the validity countdown.
Things that don't start your clock:
- Installing the eSIM on your phone.
- Connecting to Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi doesn't touch the eSIM).
- The eSIM showing up in Settings as "ready to use."
Things that do start the clock:
- Switching to the eSIM for data while connected to a local mobile network.
- Toggling Airplane Mode off while the eSIM is your active data plan, at a location where the local network is visible.
Why this matters
You can buy a plan a week before your trip and install it at home — totally fine. Just don't switch your phone's data over to the eSIM until you've landed. If you do, the network registration starts the clock and your "15-day plan" might run out 15 days from that test, not 15 days from arrival.
How to delay activation safely
After installing:
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular. Make sure the eSIM is on, but keep "Cellular Data" set to your home plan. Switch it over after you land.
- Android: SIM card manager. Mobile data dropdown points to your home plan. Switch to the eSIM when you arrive.
Checking remaining validity
Once active, you can see remaining days in your account: esimple.ai/account → tap the order → "Activation details" shows the SIM's current state.
You'll also get a top-up reminder email when validity hits 2 days or data drops below 20%.
