Using Your eSIM

Using your esimple plan as a hotspot

Personal Hotspot on iPhone, Mobile Hotspot on Android. What counts against your allowance.

Using Your esimple Plan as a Hotspot

Yes — you can share your esimple data with other devices via Personal Hotspot. There's nothing special you need to enable on our side. It works the same as any data SIM.

iPhone (Personal Hotspot)

  1. Settings → Personal Hotspot.
  2. Toggle Allow Others to Join on.
  3. Set a password (or accept the one shown).
  4. Other devices see your iPhone as a wifi network — they connect with the password.

That's it. If hotspot doesn't appear in Settings, make sure the esimple plan is selected as your data line first ([Cellular → Cellular Data → esimple]).

Android (Mobile Hotspot)

Pixel / stock Android: Settings → Network & internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot → toggle on.

Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile Hotspot and Tethering → Mobile Hotspot → toggle on.

Set a name and password if you haven't before. Other devices join via wifi.

What counts against your allowance

Everything you tether counts the same as data used on the phone itself. A laptop watching a video over your hotspot eats data the same way the phone would. A few rough numbers:

  • Browsing / email / chat: ~50–200 MB per hour.
  • HD video streaming: 1–3 GB per hour.
  • 4K video: 7–10 GB per hour.
  • Big software updates: hundreds of MB to several GB.

If you're tethering a laptop and don't want it to chew through your plan, pause cloud backups, OS updates, and auto-syncing apps before connecting. Those are the silent killers.

Will my hotspot get throttled?

Some home carriers throttle hotspot speed to discourage tethering. Travel eSIMs almost never do this — there's no commercial reason to. You'll typically get the same speed via hotspot that you get on the phone.

If hotspot feels markedly slower than direct phone use, the cause is usually one of:

  • Weak signal on the phone itself. Hotspot speed inherits the phone's speed.
  • Many devices on the hotspot. Wifi bandwidth gets divided.
  • The laptop is on 2.4 GHz and the phone is offering 5 GHz (or vice versa). Reconnect manually.

Battery and heat

Running hotspot for a long time is hard on your phone. Tips:

  • Plug the phone in if you can.
  • Don't leave the hotspot on when no one's using it.
  • If the phone gets uncomfortably warm, give it a break.

Common gotchas

  • Hotspot greyed out. The esimple plan isn't selected as your data line. Switch it in Cellular / SIM settings.
  • Other devices won't connect. Try restarting hotspot (off, then back on). Check the password is being entered correctly.
  • Hotspot drops after a minute. iOS auto-disables hotspot when no one's connected. Re-toggle it, or set "Maximize Compatibility" on (Settings → Personal Hotspot).

If hotspot stays broken after the basics, email support@esimple.ai with your phone model and the order reference.
