Is your phone carrier-unlocked?

Why phones need to be unlocked, how to check on iOS and Android, how to request an unlock.

Is Your Phone Carrier-Unlocked?

For esimple to work, your phone needs to accept SIMs other than the one it was sold with. That's called being unlocked. Most phones bought outright are unlocked. Phones financed through a carrier often start locked and unlock automatically after the contract ends — but not always.

Why this matters for eSIMs

A locked phone refuses to register on a network that isn't its home carrier. The eSIM will install, show up in your settings, even pick up a signal — and then fail to actually move data. The phone is silently rejecting the new SIM.

The fix is to unlock the phone. The good news: it's usually free, and your home carrier handles it.

How to check on iPhone

  1. Settings → General → About.
  2. Scroll to Carrier Lock.
  3. It should say "No SIM restrictions."

If it says anything else — the name of a carrier, or "SIM locked" — your phone is locked.

How to check on Android

Android phones don't have a one-tap status check. Two reliable methods:

  • Insert a different carrier's SIM. If your phone connects normally and can make a call, it's unlocked. If you get a "SIM not allowed" or similar message, it's locked.
  • Dial the carrier. Ring your home carrier's support line and ask: "Is my IMEI unlocked?" Have your IMEI ready (dial *#06# to display it).

How to request an unlock

The exact process depends on your carrier, but the steps are similar everywhere:

  1. Confirm you qualify. Most carriers unlock for free if any of the following are true: the device is paid off, you've completed the minimum service period (typically 60–90 days), the contract has ended, or you're a customer in good standing.
  2. Submit the unlock request. This is usually a form on the carrier's website or a phone call to support. They'll ask for your IMEI and account details.
  3. Wait. Unlocks typically process in 1–2 business days. Some carriers do it in minutes.
  4. Complete the unlock on the phone. Some carriers do it remotely (you just restart the phone). Others send instructions involving a SIM swap or a code.

US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile), UK carriers (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three), most EU carriers, and the major operators in Australia, Canada, India, the Gulf and Southeast Asia all support free unlocking once eligibility is met.

Already abroad and just discovered your phone is locked?

A few options:

  • Contact your home carrier remotely (most have web forms or chat).
  • If you have a spare unlocked phone with you, move the eSIM to that.
  • Some local prepaid shops at major airports offer cheap unlocked basic phones for travellers.

If you need help confirming what's going wrong, email support@esimple.ai with your phone model and a screenshot of the eSIM in your settings. We can usually tell from the symptoms whether it's a lock issue.
